I think I’m in a dream. A very realistic, freezing cold, but a dream. I stare into his eyes trying to comprehend what he is saying.

Hugo Pierce wants me.… I look into his dark, magnetic pools and the warmth emitting from them chases away all the coldness on this rooftop.

Time for the truth to come out, and my heart squeezes inside my chest.

“Hugo, I’m damaged. Very, very damaged, but still in one piece. And I don’t want to be destroyed completely because that is what will happen after you’re done with me.”

Pain and confusion splash all over his face, I hold up a finger to his lips. “Trust me. Hearing you say all these words is the most amazing thing I’ve experienced in a long time. I like you…And it’s because I like you so much, I can’t let myself go into the abyss with you. The land of fun and casual, because for me, it will be everything but casual.”

“I don’t know whether to be angry at you or sad for you right now. You believe yourself to be so damaged when all I see is the strongest woman I know, someone who lived through backstabbing pain yet still gets up every morning with a smile,” Hugo tells me. He takes a step back from me and wraps his hands around the back of his neck.

“Okay, all cards on the table. You and I will talk without holding back,” he warns me.

“Okay,” I respond.

“Maybe…maybe my heart was dead before for a reason. You are not the only one who’s lived through a painful heartbreak. My story can’t compare to yours, but the only time I have put a crack in the darkness to let someone in, she crushed it.” This is not just honesty; Hugo is showing me his raw side. He is being vulnerable.

“Fun and casual is all I’ve ever done in my thirty-three years. I’ve never had a true connection with another woman apart from the one I mentioned just now, just sex. I was never interested in a relationship. I believed and felt that everyone saw me as an expensive, good-looking piece of meat. So, I reciprocated the feeling.”

He looks up at the sky, watching while flurries make their descent. I still can’t find any words to respond.

“I told myself I will never let anyone in, even through a tiny crack again. But then I saw you, and something flickered inside my dead heart. I felt this crazy desire to know you, to have you in my life. I wanted to share my every deep secret, my every dark fantasy, with you. And I didn’t even know your name.”

“At first, I told myself it was just lust talking. That this was a normal response to seeing a beautiful woman.” He kept on talking, and I swallow hard, a lump stuck in my throat.

“I needed to know you better, so I arranged for you to sit next to me on that plane.” Hugo looks away from my face, and my eyes go widen.
